Episode 11 Blog Notes: Lilting Lullabies & Tranquil Tunes for Babies, Tots & Young Kiddos, Part 1

Introduction

A huge welcome to episode 11 of the Welcome to Music podcast – Lilting Lullabies and Tranquil Tunes for Babies, Tots and young kiddos – Part 1.

So guess what? I have some fabulous news - I am now a grandparent! Yes you heard that right - my daughter had a beautiful baby boy two weeks ago. I have been loving my baby time and it’s such an honour and privilege to look after a tiny bundle of spirit and joy. To celebrate this exciting event, after years of writing and recording songs and presenting courses on Babies and Tots, we decided to put together a compilation of our lullabies and tranquil tunes for babies, tots and young kiddos from 0 up to 8 years.

The songs are a mix of lullabies to help little ones go off to sleep and tranquil tunes to help young kiddos relax and wind down. They can be used in any setting from the home, preschool, school, in the pram, in your arms, on the change table – well you get the idea.

There are 12 songs to share with you – and this will be shared with you over 3 episodes.

Many of the songs are in 3/4 or 6/8 metre, minor keys, with melodies in Aeolian or Dorian modes and provide some of the following:

  • Easy sing-alongs either in the Chorus or via simple words such as 'do’s','la’s' or 'hey’s'
  • Simple techniques such as echo, ostinato (repeated pattern), round or harmonies
  • Simple actions and movements such as rocking and swaying
  • Relaxation through lying on the floor, listening and resting
  • Opportunity to bond or work with a partner - child and adult or child and child through gentle movements
  • The use of scarves, lycra sheets, parachutes and/or elastics
  • Sensory regulation strategies where children can adjust and control their energy level, emotions, behaviours and attention through engagement with their senses
  • To work with a large group through dance or creative movement
  • To accompany with percussion, recorder or ukulele
  • To learn songs in other languages
  • To improvise through movement or instruments

To see all of the notes including an introduction to lullabies, how to sing with your little one with quotes by Dr Anita Collins and all songs with learning outcomes, lyrics, activities and links to music tracks and some YouTube videos, access our blog https://www.welcometomusicpodcast.net/ HERE.

Here is a Romanian/Finnish Version of ‘The Ocean Song’ called ‘Song of the Sea’ It is a very different and beautiful arrangement and video of our song – ‘The Ocean Song’ from ‘Move It’.

We were contacted by Piron Simona - Mima Muzica, who is a percussion teacher and musician currently located in Romania. She has been teaching in Finland for the past 6 years and came upon some of our music and one of her favourite songs is the "Ocean Song" that has given her students the opportunity to improvise. With her students and colleagues they made a recording with an adaptation for the words.

The lyrics are in Romanian:

The sea wave is heard, how it's whispering a world (metaphor).

The sea wave is seen, how it's dancing and dreaming.

The concept is that both Romania and Finland have an opening to the sea.

They have used piano, 2 voices, ocean drum, seashell chimes, sansula kalimba and glockenspiel. I have to say, it felt so special to hear this - I love the choice of instruments that are used, the vocals, the sound of the words and especially the improvised vocals over the Dorian tonality are so beautiful.
