Episode 3 Blog Notes: Songs of Love, Peace and Healing for a Hopeful World: Part 2

Episode 3 Blog Notes: Songs of Love, Peace and Healing for a Hopeful World: Part 2

Here is Episode 3 – Music for love, peace and healing – Part 2

It’s so lovely that you can join us for the Welcome to Music Podcast. This is episode 3 and part 2 of our theme – Music for love, peace and healing.

Last week we featured 3 beautiful songs that represented our theme –
‘Salaam’ – a Hebrew and Arabic song about peace,
‘Imagine If’ – also about peace and
‘Lo Yisa Goy’ – a Hebrew song also about peace and harmony in the world.
In this episode we are featuring 4 more beautiful songs that reflect this theme.

As I said in part 1, I hope that these songs can give you and your children an opportunity to discuss and express what’s happening in the world in a way that can provide some beauty, tranquility and peace in their lives. All the songs can give your children an inclusive, successful and heart-felt experience.

1.EVERYONE SING

‘Everyone Sing’ is a gospel style song that Phil and I wrote that expresses the hope that not only can everyone sing together loud and clear but also we can dream of a world without war where we can all sing songs of peace. This song is ideal for your choirs where it can be sung with harmonies in the Chorus and as a 2-part round with Verse against Chorus. It also lends itself to vocal exploration through improvisation.

Lyrics

Chorus:

Everyone sing, whoh oh oh, sing loud and clear

Everyone sing, whoh oh oh, sing far and near

Everyone sing, whoh oh oh hear your voice ring

Whoh oh oh oh oh, everyone sing

Verse:

Let’s all dream for the world to be one

Hand in hand, our daughters and sons

Comes the day when war will cease

Then we’ll sing songs of peace

Activities can include:

Sing the chorus

Say – echo say the words in the chorus, 2 bars at a time

Sing - echo sing the melody line in the chorus, 2 bars at a time with hand signs

Sing - echo sing the harmony lines 2 bars at a time with hand signs

Put Together – sing the 3 parts of the chorus together

Sing the verse

Say – echo say the words in the verse 2 bars at a time accompanied by actions/signs for the important words

Sing – echo sing the verse 2 bars at a time then in unison

Arrangement and Performance

Put together – sing the chorus and verse together with all parts

Add vocal exploration and improvisation

Arrangement – work out the arrangement and ending

2.HASHIVENU

‘Hashivenu’ is a significant Jewish and Hebrew prayer from Chapter 5, Verse 21, Book of Lamentations which is sung in the synagogue as the ark is closed after the Torah service. It includes a 3-part round in 3’s with simple dance, percussion arrangement and ukulele accompaniment for healing and peace arranged by Susie and Phil. Once again the Acapella app has been used to demonstrate the vocal harmonies in Hebrew, the round in English, percussion and ukulele parts. A beautiful song to sing with your choirs.

Activities

  • Create a body ostinato with a pattern of 3’s and listen to the English words
  • Echo sing each of the 3 sections
  • Dance – create a simple dance in 3’s with something different for each section
  • Sing in a 3-part round
  • Play the percussion accompaniment
  • Play the ukulele accompaniment

3.A BETTER PLACE

‘A Better Place’ is a sensitive call and response song about making this world a better place, written by Susie and Phil. ‘Call and response’ is a great technique to use where the responses are the same and the calls are different each time. By joining in with only the responses, this allows everyone to have instant success. It’s a great song for your choirs where you can add harmonies on the responses and in the Choruses. Activities include recorders playing the melody, a percussion arrangement, ukulele accompaniment and improvisation on recorders and percussion instruments over the calls.

Lyrics

CALL                                                                RESPONSE

Verse 1                                                            Verse 1

Let’s join hands and stand as one                  Wear a smile upon your face

Love enough for everyone                              Make this world a better place

Verse 2                                                            Verse 2

Like a rainbow in the storm                            Wear a smile upon your face

the love you give will keep you warm            Make this world a better place

Verse 1

Verse 3                                                            Verse 3

Even when you’re feeling blue                       Wear a smile upon your face

There’s so much that you can do                   Make this world a better place

Chorus

Ooh, aah, ooh, aah, ooh, aah, ooh, aah x 2

Verses, Chorus

Coda

4. HINEI MUTOV

Hinei Mutov is a fabulous Hebrew hymn from Psalm 133, traditionally sung at Jewish Shabbat (sabbath) feasts. It is a 2-part round in 3’s that gets faster and faster building in momentum. It extends well into a grapevine dance in a circle or with a partner, percussion arrangement or ukulele accompaniment. There are a number of different versions of this song and we’ve chosen one of the very popular ones.

Translation - how good it is and how pleasant, for brothers to live together

Pronunciation – ‘Ch’ is pronounced ‘H’ with a guttural throaty sound

Activities

  • Say then sing– the Hebrew and English words
  • Sing and dance in a 2 part round getting faster and faster - see the dance step suggestions
  • Work out how to change places with a partner or move to a new partner!!
  • Create your own dance
  • Percussion piece - add xylophone, metallophone and glockenspiel accompaniment
  • Add ukulele accompaniment
